Tommy Thomas wonders if Anwar Ibrahim has the number to become prime minister.

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim should look in the mirror and ask himself why he hasn’t become prime minister, says a former attorney general.

Tommy Thomas, who served as the country’s top prosecutor during the 22-month Pakatan Harapan administration, said he felt sad for the PKR president, China Press reported.

He said Anwar thought he would replace Dr Mahathir Mohamad, only to be sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 before being charged and jailed for sodomy and corruption.

Thomas said the Port Dickson MP was jailed because “Mahathir in particular felt threatened by him and used the courts to stop him”.

“It is very sad for him that he is serving his sentence in prison, so people feel sorry for (him).

“But that doesn’t mean that 24 years later – we are now in 2022 – he has the automatic right to become prime minister. You don’t, the voters may not agree,” he was quoted as saying by the Chinese daily.

Thomas said there should be a level of self-reflection by Anwar.

“He has to look in the mirror and ask the question, ‘Why does this always pass me by?’”

He also said the question was whether Anwar had ruled the majority.

“And the next question is why doesn’t he have enough numbers?”

In April, Anwar insisted he had the support of most lawmakers in 2020, which would make him prime minister. He told Malaysiakini that he still had a letter of support from the party chairman.

However, his bid to become the next prime minister was thwarted by those who could not agree to “certain conditions”.

In September 2020, Anwar claimed he had a “strong, convincing and resilient majority” to form a new government and declared the collapse of Muhyiddin Yassin’s government.

Recently, an analyst claimed that Anwar would form a new government with the UMNO faction. Political leaders have since rejected the idea.
